Recently, Savvy Cooperative and A Ballsy Sense of Tumor came together to answer one of life’s great mysteries: Why don’t men discuss their health openly? By polling roughly 80 male Savvy members, they learned many interesting things about attitudes towards men’s health. Nearly 75% agreed with the statement, “There is a societal expectation that men shouldn’t talk about their health.” While it appears that we’ve dropped the ball, it’s not all bleak. When asked about their own views on men’s health, they had very different feelings. 80% of men said they regularly talk about their health with others - female spouses, doctors, and male friends being the common discussion partners. 73% of these men had a conversation in the past week, and over 67% reported that they would be comfortable asking another man about his health. Furthermore, nearly all men (87% to be exact) felt that it was important to talk about their health with someone else.
What is interesting about these figures is that they fly in the face of most studies about men’s health. Year after year, numerous research reports state that men don’t want to talk about their health. What makes these figures so different? Simply put, the Savvy community is unique in the sense that most members are either a current patient, former patient, or loved one of a patient. They have no choice but to talk about their health, and they do so proudly, without shame or embarrassment.
Savvy Cooperative and A Ballsy Sense of Tumor are putting together a series of blog posts called “Savvy Men Say..” In this series, we’re asking you, the men, to write about your own health journey on a public platform. We want to instill the feeling that sharing your health story isn't weak; it's a strength we need to cultivate more in men. Ultimately, we want you to share your stories, continue to be proactive in your own health, and foster dialogue with other men about their health.
Admittedly, men’s health is a tough nut to crack, but once we get the ball rolling, there will be no stopping us.
About Savvy Cooperative
Savvy Cooperative is the first and only patient-owned co-op that empowers people to use their health experiences to inform new products and services through surveys, interviews, product testing and more! It was founded by two patients who wanted to make sure people who shared their health experiences were fairly compensated. That’s why we are patient-owned and the majority of our profits go right back to our members!
